Why do I take self-portraits?

I really don’t like pictures of myself.  That may be true of most people who were not raised on Facebook.  Despite that, every once in a while I like to capture myself in a photograph.  Some of these pictures are rather straight-forward self-portraits.  I will either use a tripod and timer to take a picture of myself or I will set up the photo and ask my wife to take the picture.

On other occasions I spot a reflection that, in effect, puts me in the scene.  That’s probably my favorite type of self-portrait.  When processing an image like that I might flip it horizontally so that the final picture is not a mirror image.  Sometimes I just leave it as is.

A third type of photograph that I consider a self-portrait is one that includes my shadow.  Others may not consider this to be a self-portrait since you cannot really see me.  But, that’s a fun way of adding myself to the picture.

It seems like I never really answered the question that I posed.  Maybe I don’t know the answer, or maybe it’s an ego thing.  Who knows? But, if you’re not tired of seeing me yet, you can see more self-portraits in the gallery below.
