An exhibit: Stars and Stripes

Stars and Stripes

Last summer I wrote a post about Flag Day.  It was the result of a trip to Washington, DC, a place where it’s impossible not to notice flags, especially the American flag.  After that trip it seemed like I was noticing flags everywhere. Not just on government buildings, but on ice fishing shanties, construction cranes, and theater curtains. Not just on flag poles, but on barns, in windows, and on motorcycles. The Stars and Stripes of our flag are everywhere, woven into the fabric of America.

2016 is another Olympic year, this time in Rio.  It’s another quest for gold and another sea of flags. You couldn’t have missed the colors of the nations waving everywhere. Flags are, of course, usually considered a symbol of national pride, such as at the Olympics or in 4th of July parades. But, they show up in many different venues for many different reasons. At times they are just used for decoration; at times they are waved at celebrations; at times they are the backdrop for deep personal sorrow.

My collection of flag pictures has expanded from the ones posted last year and I have an exhibit on display at Sunroom Cafe, 638 State Street, from August 22 – October 30, 2016.  So, if you happen to be in Madison, walk up the steps to the second floor cafe, enjoy a nice meal — breakfast, lunch or dinner — and take a look at my Stars & Stripes photos.
