If you’re looking to get a sense of the antebellum South, Charleston, South Carolina, would certainly be one place to visit. It’s history, however, covers more than slavery and the Civil War. Charleston is the oldest city in South Carolina and it has played a key role in the history of our country from colonial America and the Revolutionary War right up to the present. It’s location on the coast gives it a mild climate as evidenced by the palm trees that line many of its streets. Travel magazines often list it as one of the most hospitable cities in the country.
