Monochrome

I doubt Paul Simon would ever write a song called Monochrome, but there is something to be said for monochromatic images.  I’m not referring to black-and-white images, though they are obviously monochromatic.  I’m talking about color photographs that are predominantly one color.  That could be any color, even bright reds or blues, but I tend to prefer those that have very little color.  I will admit that those images are very close to B&W.  In fact, I often convert them to B&W and compare the two versions.  Sometimes I like the B&W better than the color image.  Most of the time I like the color because it adds a little softness or life to the image.

Here are a couple images that illustrate what I’m talking about.  Both are shown in color and B&W so you can decide for yourself.  What’s your preference?

  1. From the first two pictures I prefer the left one because of the “warmer atmosphere”, from the second two photos the right one because of the better contrasts …
    Kind regards -Wolfgang

    1. Thanks for your comments, Wolfgang. Since you’re from Germany you might be interested to know that the first picture was taken in St. Jakob’s Cathedral in Rothenburg ob der Tauber and the second picture was taken in the Munich Residenz.

      1. Thanks for the hint – I live in Munich, however I have not yet visited the Residenz …
